7 Steps on How to Ship a Desktop Computer Safely

The world of commerce is nothing short of extraordinary. With just a touch of a button, we can purchase different goods online, and have them shipped to us instantly. Or, you may choose to export something out to another destination in the world. This is only limited by your imagination, as virtually anything can be shipped out.

Take, for instance, a desktop computer. A machine that is incredibly delicate, yet very powerful, can be delivered to any far-off destination in mind. However, like most pieces of equipment, it must be handled with care.

To ensure its safety during travel, follow these seven steps on how to ship a desktop computer:

1. Gather shipping supplies

When you ship a desktop computer, start by gathering all the supplies first. All packages that need to be shipped off somewhere will require you to gather some materials. Shipping supplies are fairly inexpensive, and don’t require you to pay a ridiculous amount of fees. For starters, you will generally require an appropriately-sized box. Since your desktop computer will be large, this is essential.

Once you have gotten the box, the only other supplies needed for the job include bubble wrap and packing peanuts. These help to ensure that your computer has a maximized state of protection. If you are shipping out external accessories, ensure that you can house them in its own, respective packaging.

2. Wrap the desktop computer

The first part of the procedure involves efficiently wrapping your computer for shipping. This will largely depend on one of two things. If you plan on wrapping your desktop separate from the monitor, you’ll have to take this into consideration. If that is not the case, be sure to wrap both together in the wrap.

After you have wrapped all components successfully, seal it with packing tape. You’ll want to ensure that there is enough tape on all parts of this package. Failing to do so means that it becomes more susceptible to external factors, such as liquid spillage.

3. Pack the desktop computer

Packing your desktop computer should not be rushed in any respect. Although you may initially believe it is rather easy to do, this couldn’t be further from the truth. After your computer and monitor have been wrapped together, carefully place it into the box. If you have your desktop’s original box on hand, this could also be used.

After the machine has been put inside, wrap the entire box with bubble wrap. This helps to add extra cushioning to the package, to mitigate any potential harm from occurring. Once this has been completed, you’ll next want to place the entire package into an appropriate shipping box.

4. Pack the computer accessories

This part of the packing process can vary from owner to owner. However, should it apply to you, your desktop’s accessories can be packaged in a couple ways. If they can fit into your main box without being stuffed in, you won’t have to get a separate box. Going about this route allows you to reduce shipping costs overall!

5. Prepare for shipping

Your desktop computer, for all intents and purposes, has now been packed up. Now, you’ll have to make sure the shipping box has been sealed accordingly. Ensure all packaging peanuts have been placed inside, and then seal the box with packing tape. Tightness can vary here; you want to find a subtle middle ground so that your box doesn’t break open during transport.

Afterwards, place your desired shipping label over the box. Cover the label with clear tape as well, in order to prevent it from tearing off while it is being shipped out. You may also want to apply some fragile-worded stickers to the box, indicating that the contents inside are delicate.

6. Research shipping services

Generally speaking, most shipping services will charge about the same in price for desktop computers. However, it is still important to research a few. Different shipping services and providers across Canada will have different delivery times, depending on where your computer is being sent. Weight may also play a factor, in determining the final cost of what is being sent off.

7. Deliver package to service

The final step includes actually getting your desktop computer to your chosen postal service. Thankfully, there are a few ways in which you can do this. Many modern day postal services have changed the way they do business. No longer do you have to physically go to a service location to drop it off.

At-home pickup is a popular option for many postal services. This means that a courier will pick up your package, and ensure it is taken to the main destination for shipping. Choose one that best fits your needs, and your package will be on its way.

Packing and shipping a desktop computer may seem challenging at first glance. It isn’t, however. The packing process remains the same as it would for any other item you can think of. As long as you take your time with all parts of the procedure, your computer will be in good hands!
